Learning
Caledonian Primary School places growth for all students as our highest priority. Our curriculum includes whole class, small group and individual experiences to ensure each child is able to learn and grow at their own point of need.Students engage with a two-hour English block and one-hour Mathematics block each day, in addition to weekly Science, Spelling, History, Geography and Wellbeing. ICT is incorporated throughout our curriculum. We have specialist programs in Physical Education, Art, Music and French.
TEACHING AND LEARNING - ENGLISH
Caledonian Primary School practices a consistent approach to all English programs from Prep to Year 6. Explicit instruction is embedded within every lesson to ensure our students are exposed to systematic teaching to assist their learning of new concepts and operations. Within our learning spaces, you will see a very high level of student/teacher interaction and engaged students who take pride in their learning.Morning English blocks are uninterrupted for Prep to Year 2 to ensure all students have the opportunity to consolidate their learning. TEACHING AND LEARNING - MATHEMATICS
Caledonian Primary School has developed a whole school pedagogy in Mathematics that caters to the individual needs of our students. Our daily one-hour block ensures that targeted, focused teaching occurs at the need of each student, determined by student data. The use of various assessment tools such as the Mathematics Online Interview, NAPLAN and PAT Maths has enhanced and supported these strategies.Daily Reviews are used consistently across the school, and include:Number/Algebra (basic number facts, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, times tables, place value, fractions, decimals, money, numeracy vocabulary, problem solving)Measurement (time, time facts, calendars, timetables, abbreviations, vocabulary, conversions, problem solving)Geometry (shapes, directions, lines, angles, vocabulary, problem solving)Statistics/Probability (fractions, percentages, decimals, graphing, probability, vocabulary, problem solving)Through our engaging and diverse program, our goal is to develop students who are confident and skilled mathematicians with an appreciation for the important role mathematics has in their life, at school and beyond.

SCIENCE
Caledonian Primary has an ongoing commitment to excellence in Science. All students engage with Science on a weekly basis which develops their knowledge, understanding and skills. Our program promotes student interest while exploring scientific phenomena and drawing evidence-based conclusions.
DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES
We believe that Digital Technologies should be used for creation, problem solving and to enhance and reflect our core learning. Devices are utilised throughout all subjects to prepare students for our technological world.All students in Grades 3 to 6 have their own Chromebook laptop at school to use for learning. Google Education Suite is used by students and staff to collaborate, learn and create together.Students in Prep to 2 have access to class sets of iPads which are embedded within the curriculum to enhance their learning opportunities.
MUSIC
Caledonian Primary School offers a developmental music program from P-6. Our music education program offers all students the opportunity to be actively involved for an hour long session each week per semester in learning music through singing and playing. They have opportunities in the music classroom to compose, create and perform music while developing a repertoire of songs that target specific skills appropriate to their level of learning music. The Junior years tuition focusses on beat, rhythm, tempo, pitch, instrument families and creating their own beginner rhythms. Year 3-6 students receive tuition on ukulele, guitar and drumming as part of the classroom music education program to further develop and enhance music literacy skills and music language.
ART
The Visual Art program at Caledonian Primary School is designed to encourage and challenge students to achieve their artistic potential in an enjoyable and supportive environment. Students develop their creativity and imagination as well as refining their practical and fine motor skills. They learn to make choices when experimenting with materials, tools and techniques.
Throughout their time at Caledonian Primary School students will get the opportunity to explore a wide variety of different art mediums such as drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, clay, sculpture, construction and textiles. Students learn to communicate through their art, respond to the artworks of others and gain appreciation from well known artists.
PE
Movement is a powerful medium for learning, through which students can acquire, practise and refine personal, behavioural, social and cognitive skills. As part of the Victorian Curriculum Caledonian Primary School provides a specialist PE program for all of its students from Prep to Grade 6.
Students engage in a wide range of sports and sports clinics as school and local area based competitions.

At Caledonian Primary School, all of the students from Prep to Year 6 participate in weekly French lessons and learn the fundamentals of the language and culture. We use an interactive lesson style in order to maximise the students’ engagement and participation in French listening, speaking, reading and writing activities. The overall objective of the French program at Caledonian Primary School is to help equip our students with the necessary attitudes and skills to become effective language learners both in their first language and in additional languages.
